Toyota celebrates 23 years on top
ALMOST one in five new cars sold in Australia during 2025 was a Toyota, the Japanese importer rounding out the calendar year with an impressive 19.3 market share points and sales of 239,863 units.
The 2025 result is Toyota Australia’s second highest on record and exceeds its beginning-of-year target by nine per cent.
It also marks Toyota’s 23rd consecutive year as Australian’s best-selling automotive brand, a feat it attributes to an extensive dealer and genuine parts distribution network, and a strong reputation for quality, durability, and reliability.
Eight Toyota models led their respective segments in 2025 – Camry, Corolla, Coaster, HiAce, HiAce Commuter, HiLux 4x2, LandCrusier wagon, and RAV4 – the latter marking its sixth consecutive year as Australia’s best-selling SUV.
Toyota models selling in excess of 10,000 units in 2025 included the RAV4 (51,947), HiLux (51,297), LandCruiser Prado (26,106), Corolla (18,968), Corolla Cross (12,686), HiAce (11,073), and Yaris Cross (10,928), with several other model lines achieving high four-figure tallies.
Following the brand’s move to offer only petrol-electric hybrid passenger vehicles in June 2024, Toyota now has a hybrid sales share of 48.6 per cent, or 116,573 units – more than that sold by second-place Ford and Toyota luxury marque Lexus combined.
“For more than six decades Toyota has been part of Australia’s story, with over eight million vehicles delivered to customers across the nation,” said Toyota Motor Corporation Australia president and CEO Matthew Callachor.
“This legacy is built on our reputation for quality, durability, and reliability.
“In 2025, we celebrated the launch of the ninth-generation HiLux, a vehicle that continues its impressive popularity in Australia.
“Looking ahead, the HiLux story enters an exciting new chapter. In 2026, we will introduce the first-ever battery electric HiLux, followed by a (hydrogen) fuel-cell electric variant in 2028.
“Our RAV4 remains Australia’s most popular SUV, a testament to its versatility and appeal. In 2026, we will introduce the next-generation RAV4, including, for the first time, a plug-in hybrid option.
“These milestones reinforce our commitment to a multi-pathway strategy, ensuring Australians have access to the right technologies for today and tomorrow.
“Recently, we announced our ambition of ‘30 by 2030’; a clear aspiration to achieve 30 per cent of our sales from zero and low-emission vehicles by the end of the decade.
“2025 was another successful year, made possible by the dedication of our employees, dealers, suppliers and customers. It is through their ongoing commitment to the brand that Toyota remains the most trusted automotive brand in Australia.
