Toyota has upgraded its Prius v hybrid seven-seater with a fresh look, improved comfort and convenience, sharper ride and handling, plus expanded safety features.
The two-model line-up builds on Toyota's cutting-edge safety technology with the introduction of lane departure alert and an improved pre-crash safety system.
Revisions to the Prius v suspension, with adjustments to the damping force, have resulted in improved ride comfort and increased handling stability.
Exterior updates to the Prius v expand its visual appeal with a stronger look that takes up Toyota's latest design cues.
Toyota's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the first major changes since launch in 2012 keeps Prius v at the cutting edge of its competitive set.
"Prius v offers more cargo space than most small SUVs yet it can travel 100km on less than five litres of fuel*," Mr Cramb said.
"The latest updates are focused on safety, multi-media technology and additional ride comfort while ensuring the comprehensive standard features of Prius v meet the needs of a wide range of buyers," he said.
The revised Prius v front-end features a new upper grille, a more prominent Toyota badge that extends the forward line of the bonnet, and vertical LED running lamps.
Slim profile headlamps give Prius v a distinctive sharp-eyed appearance while the gloss-black lower grille adopts Toyota's signature trapezoidal shape.
At the rear, there's a new combination lamp design and, following the styling themes adopted at the front, a new licence-plate trim and bumper with an integrated diffuser.
Changes in the cabin include new interior trim, upgraded audio systems with touch-screen displays, a revised instrument binnacle and a new 4.2-inch colour TFT information screen controlled using switches on the steering wheel.
Both Prius v grades (Prius v and Prius v i-Tech) include seven airbags, stability and traction control, climate-control air conditioning, reversing camera, head-up display, 16-inch alloy wheels, three-piece sliding second-row seat, 50/50 split and fold-flat third-row seat, hill-start assist control, daytime running lamps, electric vehicle mode and touch-tracer steering-wheel controls.
Prices are unchanged at $34,490# for the Prius v and $44,490# for the Prius v i-Tech.
Since releasing the first Prius in 1997, Toyota Motor Corporation has sold more than seven million hybrid vehicles around the world including 75,000 in Australia.
Prius v is Australia's only seven-seat full-hybrid vehicle.
Its Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain employs a 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a 60kW electric motor, for a combined system output of 100kW.
Power from the two sources is seamlessly blended through an electronically controlled all-gear continuously variable transmission, helping achieve fuel economy of 4.4 litres/100km* and CO2 emissions of 101g/km*.
Electric energy collected from regenerative braking is stored in a lithium-ion battery for use when required to help accelerate the vehicle.
Toyota Prius v Variants
The new front design of Prius v is a powerful evolution of the company's 'Keen Look' and 'Under Priority' styling elements.
The radiator grille, front bumper and headlamps on both model grades are new, including newly adopted vertical LED daytime running lamps that reduce power consumption.
The new headlamp designs accentuate the Keen Look and have integrated turn signal lamps to increase visibility for other drivers and pedestrians.
The entry level model has new halogen headlamps while the i-Tech model has new Bi‐LED headlamps for greater visibility and reduced power consumption.
A single cylindrical projector-type lamp provides both high and low beam in the i-Tech headlamp.
Light Guide LED clearance lamps further boost power savings while also providing a styling point through the front face.
The Toyota badge accentuates a new upper grille and is set in an enhanced, three-dimensional extension of the bonnet.
The Under Priority design features a large trapezoidal lower grille finished in glossy black metallic paint, emphasising the car's broad stance.
This impression of width is reinforced by bumper corners that now feature a 3D form flowing from the headlamps into new air intakes and newly designed LED daytime running lamps.
At the rear, a new combination lamp design features light-guide technology and red inner lenses in place of the current model's clear lenses.
Rear upgrades also include a redesigned licence plate garnish, a new bumper with an integrated diffuser and a rear spoiler.
Two new exterior colours are offered, Rustic Brown and Eclipse Black.
The Prius v interior has been refreshed, with improvements to the vacuum fluorescent display centre cluster, multi-information display (MID), steering wheel, instrument-panel switch layout, seat trim and audio capability.
The entry level model has new black-fabric seat trim.
Visual upgrades include chrome-plated door handles, and a new dark silver metallic finish for both the air-conditioning system's single dial controller and switchgear.
The centre console now features twin slim-line air vents with a chrome finish, for a more sophisticated appearance.
The layout of the driver's instrument binnacle has been revised, with the speedometer, shift indicator and fuel gauge placed closer to the driver, so they are closer to the line of sight while on the move.
Prius v's MID has been significantly upgraded, with a 4.2-inch full-colour TFT screen and new features, all controlled via steering wheel-mounted touch-tracer switches.
Apart from conventional information such as clock, odometer/trip meter, possible cruising range and fuel consumption per minute, the MID also includes a hybrid system indicator and an energy monitor - standard features in all Toyota hybrid vehicles.
A new 'eco judge' function helps the driver maximise the efficiency of the full hybrid powertrain, giving a points score for their eco-driving style.
The MID has climate-control and audio menu settings, as well as simple navigation indicators.
In the i-Tech model, the MID also includes the distance settings for the adaptive cruise control, and indicators for the automatic high beam, lane departure alert and pre-collision safety system.
New audios and connectivity.
Facelifted Prius v has two new audio systems, both with 6.1-inch touch-screen display and Bluetooth®^ connectivity.
The data capacity of the telephone address book has been increased to allow for up to 2,500 contacts per phone.
The six-speaker Prius v audio has a single CD player, USB and iPod®+ audio, AUX and vehicle information, including fuel-consumption history.
Even when two devices are connected, files on both can be played, with USB source displayed on the screen.
Prius v i-Tech has a premium eight-speaker JBL audio with eight-channel amplifier, digital (DAB) radio, voice recognition and navigation.
The i‐Tech audio unit contains Toyota Link** connected mobility. When connected to a compatible smartphone, the system offers apps that can help drivers find a destination, fuel and weather details as well as roadside and other assistance.
With this model's satellite navigation, drivers have the option of navigating to destinations found through the Toyota Link system. For a small fee, they can use Destination Assist## to request the help of an operator to find a particular location, which can be sent to the vehicle using the Destination Download## app.
The i-Tech audio display screen is divided into three sections, to allow the user to freely lay out necessary information on the navigation, audio, hybrid‐related display and hands‐free telephone functions.
By depressing and holding one of the divided sections, that section is selected and subsequently displayed on the full screen.
The system is compatible with flick operations: horizontally flicking advances the application menu and vertically flicking turns the pages. On the map, flicking allows the user to freely scroll the display.
Toyota has improved Prius v's ride comfort, handling stability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
The vehicle's dampers have been redesigned, damper curves revised and the spring characteristics of the rear trailing-arm bushes improved.
New front and rear dampers have increased base-valve rigidity and revised damping-force characteristics in the mid and high damper-velocity range.
The trailing arm bushes have improved spring characteristics and the direction of compression has been altered.
Together, these improvements reduce road-shock from bumps, improve ride comfort and increase handling stability.
Reducing any bumpiness in ride optimises the vehicle's NVH performance, building on running changes introduced in March 2014 that improved sound absorption through the floor and rear deck.
Prius v retains body control with torque demand to provide a flat ride on undulating roads. The system uses fine control of the electric-motor torque to optimise ride comfort and handling, as well as providing smooth turning and excellent responsiveness from the motor.
Several key safety features in Prius v have been further refined, including the hill-start assist control (HAC), adaptive cruise control (ACC) and pre-collision safety system (PCS).
In addition, facelifted Prius v adopts lane departure alert (LDA).
HAC^^ prevents the vehicle rolling backwards when the driver's foot moves from the brake to the accelerator pedal when starting off uphill.
The improved HAC system increases convenience and safety by activating automatically when the system detects that the vehicle is stationary on a hill.
As a result, the driver no longer needs to depress the brake pedal further to activate the system.
Prius v i-Tech's ACC^^ system has been upgraded with a vehicle-approaching warning (via the MID screen) to notify the driver if another vehicle is within very close range when radar cruise control is active.
PCS^^, which uses the same radar detector as the ACC, has been upgraded with a brake warning to the driver if the PCS control computer detects a potential collision situation.
Lane departure alert.
LDA^^ is designed to help avoid collisions by warning the driver if the vehicle is about to move unintentionally across lanes without using the turn signals.
The system uses a windscreen-mounted camera to monitor the vehicle's position on the road. The camera is also used for Prius v's automatic high beam.
The Toyota LDA has been tested and refined in Australia to suit local road markings and can operate on roads with lane markings on one side only.
If the vehicle deviates from its lane without using the turn signal indicator, LDA cautions the driver via a buzzer and a message on the MID screen.
