Raw Driving® is here.

Toyota 86Toyota has a proud history of producing cars that provide a sense of fun. The sort of fun that comes from vehicles developed purely to deliver Raw Driving® pleasure.

86 is one of those cars. It’s a call to arms for those who want to drive, not be driven. A car for drivers who want to feel something when behind the wheel, who want to think about the road ahead, attack the corner and push the car and themselves to the edge of their ability.

It will take you back to when engines roared and the thrill of driving produced a rush of adrenalin.

Fall in love with driving again.

Built by passion, not committee.

Toyota 86With a rich heritage dating back to the Sports 800, 2000GT and AE86, today’s 86 is designed to stimulate both the heart and the mind. Developed with the spirit of some of the great racing sports cars, 86 is a rear-wheel drive car that’s made by drivers for drivers.

Its crisp aerodynamic lines are optimised to slice through air and turn heads. The low, flat bonnet signals the presence of the boxer engine beneath. And its gently curving surfaces have been crafted with hand-formed elegance that create an enduring appeal.

Fusing driver and car.

Toyota 86 interiorThe 86 fuses driver and car to create an experience reminiscent of motoring’s glory days.

Enter the performance-orientated cockpit, grip the 365mm steering wheel from the body-hugging, bolstered ‘racing inspired’ seats and you’ll quickly realise every feature of the 86 is there for a reason.

While the engine sounds are ducted into the cabin, you’ll notice there are no audio controls on the steering wheel, because controlling the music the 86 makes is already in your hands.

However hot the driving, there’s also climate control to keep you cool, with automatic dual-zone air conditioning on the GTS model. And the 86 comes standard with an audio player featuring all the iPod®1 and Bluetooth®2 capabilities you’d expect. The GTS also offers a traffic avoidance system,3 voice recognition and Satellite Navigation.4

Track bred performance.

Toyota 86 performanceThe fun, nimble dynamics that characterise the 86 were born and tuned on the track.

Every aspect of the handling was painstakingly tweaked at Nürburgring in Germany to hone the vital elements of acceleration, braking and cornering.

The development continued with further fine-tuning conducted at Fuji International Speedway, Suzuka Circuit and the Shibetsu Proving Ground in Japan, to ensure a driving experience like no other.

Horizontally-opposed boxer engine with D-4s injection.

Toyota 86 boxer engineWe started with a classic horizontally opposed boxer engine, as used in the early days of the Sports 800, then added our cutting edge D-4S direct injection system, to create a fiery package boasting 147kW of power and a 7,400rpm redline.

In addition to conventional port injectors, the D-4S system uses high-pressure direct injectors to supply fuel into the combustion chambers as well as conventional injectors that inject fuel into the intake port.

The boxer 2.0L naturally aspirated four-stroke petrol engine features an ideal 86mm stroke and 86mm bore, providing a powerful 205Nm of torque for strong starts. The dynamic forces of the pistons on one bank are balanced by their counterparts on the other, without the use of balance shafts.

Drivetrain.

Toyota 86 drivetrainWith a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and a 6-speed gearbox, the 86 puts you in touch with a true driving experience.

You can choose between a 6-speed triple cone synchro manual transmission (MT) or a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT). With the MT the power is literally in your hand, the 86’s gearbox renowned for its short, positive shift throws, providing a more direct feel with faster up-shifts.

The 86 GTS AT does everything possible to keep the driver in close contact with the gearing, boasting ‘Formula 1’ style shift paddles that benefit from the improved, sportier engine/transmission mapping.

The rear differential is a Torsen® (TORque SENsing) Limited Slip Differential (LSD) with a 4.1:1 ‘performance’ Final Drive Ratio. The LSD can help maximise traction by allocating power to the drive wheel with the greatest amount of grip.

High Performance Safety.

Toyota 86 safetyThe safety features of the 86 have been designed to complement your driving experience without getting in the way.

The 86 is equipped with seven SRS airbags. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) controls braking pressure to prevent wheel lock-up. There’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and VSC Sport to control the engine output and braking force delivered to each wheel under emergency conditions.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) maximises braking efficiency by automatically increasing the brake force to the wheel(s) that need it most, while Brake Assist (BA) will allow extra brake pressure during an emergency situation. You also have the choice of Traction Control (TRC), to help control spin while under acceleration.
